SMFD's UAS Team Awarded the "Best Drone Response to a Fire Operations" at IEDO Conference

Congratulations to Southern Manatee Fire’s UAS team for bringing home the “Best Drone Response to a Fire Operations” award during the International Emergency Drone Organization (IEDO) conference, held in Paris, France on December 12th . Team member FF Rich Gatanis was invited to speak at the event on the department's use of drone technology in their Hazardous Materials Response.
The award came as a result of SMFD’s use of a UAS on April 9, 2022 assisting multiple agencies in response to a massive fire at the Port of Manatee Scrap Yard. The team flew dozens of missions assisting ladder truck operations by guiding master streams to the difficult to reach fires.
